I have a membership to the Fiction Writer’s library on 47th Street. They are unfortunately moving to Brooklyn (having sold the building on 47th, they are able to build a bigger and better facility). It is muy triste.
I am trying to finish reading Dashiell Hammett’s Creeps by Night anthology before the library’s move. His selection of short stories are quite good; however, I am for most not the person who likes being scared. As a kid, I avoided the Goose Bumps books simply because the covers were frightening to me. Don’t fret! I read other enjoyable books.
I have to admit Creeps by Night‘s first couple stories were ones that kept me up. I had to finish a few immediately (these were life-and-death situations we were dealing with!). I wouldn’t recommend this book for the night.
Now that I am half way through, they are not as scary as it was to read in the beginning. The quality of scare factor is there, just not the extreme level it was for when I started. This was personal challenge that I set out to do. I figure we challenge our fears, we become better people – or more learnt.
The stories are creative (these are not short stories he wrote, but others he found and collected). Considering that I have read all Dashiell Hammett’s written works, it was a pleasant surprise to find that the Fiction Writer’s Library had this book of treasure. I just finished reading the story Faith, Hope and Charity by Irvin S.Cobb. What fun!
It would be wonderful to have this collection of short stories turned into short films that complied a full film time. There was a Spanish movie had seen a number of years ago that was complied of short films as well as a French film Paris, je time
Creeps by Night will definitely get a high rating in Goodreads!
